Esperanza En Paraiso 1 & 2 Group's story

María is the “Esperanza en el Paraíso” (Hope in Paradise) group coordinator. It is located in the city of Puerto Plata, a city whose main activities are tourism and a rum distillery; real estate is also strong in this city. These are the main sources of employment. The group is mostly involved in sales of jewelry, clothing, shoes, accessories, cosmetics and food, among other miscellaneous products.

María’s family is composed of her spouse and five family members, children and relatives among them. She tells us that she’s always been a hard working woman and has always sought to have various businesses. For example, she currently has a grocery store that she started about two years ago after having started out in underwear sales; she used profits she gradually saved to start a grocery store, which in the Dominican Republic are called “colmado.” Upon receiving this second loan she plans to use it to buy several products like: rice, beans, canned goods, snacks and sugar, among other daily use items.

Her challenges are to reach her dreams of having a large grocery store or a supermarket so that both her children and family can work in the family business, to have good economic stability and peace of mind. She wants to have the opportunity of helping her community and provide her children with the basic needs of food, clothing and education.

In this group: Maria, Natacha, Leocadia, Altagracia, Margarita, Alejandrina, Maria, Paula, Candida, Cristina
