Azucena Monserrate's story

Every two weeks the members of the community bank Las Piedras meet in the neighbourhood of Las Piedras located in the parish of Picoaza in the town of Portoviejo. The town is known for its traditional culture, for its happy people, and for its San Pedro and San Pablo celebrations.

40-year old Señora Azucena is a member of the bank. She lives common-law with her husband and has two children aged 11 and 7 who attend school. Her husband is a policeman.

Azucena has been with the bank for three loan cycles. She likes it because she can get a loan quickly and without too much paperwork. She sells Yangal beauty products such as perfumes, cosmetics, and accessories. In addition she sells all types of sandals and shoes. Azucena works 2 to 3 hours a day three days a week. The footwear is brought in from other towns at dealer prices. She’s been doing this work for three years and is doing well.

The loan will be used to buy perfume, lotions, cosmetics, sandals and shoes appropriate for the season. Azucena’s dream is to have a new taxi as the one she has is somewhat dilapidated.
