A loan of $900 helped to buy perfume, creams, cosmetics, telephone cards and clothes.

Manuela Adelaida's story

The village bank Estrella de Belén meets every 15 days in the neighborhood of Santa Marianita in the city of Manta, known for its beautiful beaches which are very popular with local and foreign tourists year-round. Most of the people there make their living from fishing or other work related to the ocean.

There we met Manuela, who is 43 years old, married and has three children - 29, 17 and 8 years old. They are studying in the university, high school and elementary school. Her husband is a fisherman.

She is a housewife who, in order to have her own money, sells catalog clothing, Porta phone cards and Yanbal products (beauty products, cosmetics, perfume and women's accessories). She works every day since she sells from home, where she has a small store. She sells her products on credit and charges every week or every 15 days, depending on what her customers want. She receives the Yanbal products at home and the clothing and phone cards downtown from a distributor. She has been doing this for 4 years.

This loan is to buy perfume, creams, cosmetics, phone cards and catalog clothing. This is her fourth cycle with the village bank and she likes it because the payments are easy to make. Her dreams are to continue with her business and that her children will be professionals.
