Joel is a farmer from the town of Litein in in the Rift Valley in Kenya. He has been practicing mixed farming for ten years and currently employs two farmhands. His farm produces milk and tea, which are all sold locally. Joel is 53 years old and married. He has 5 school-aged children who all attend school. He depends on the income from his farm to cater for the needs of his family.
Joel has requested a loan of 45,000KES through Kiva partner Juhudi Kilimo to purchase a dairy cow. The extra income from this loan will help him pay the school fees for his children and expand his business.
His major business challenges have been the lack of adequate animal feed and the unreliable artificial insemination services. He would like to increase the number of his dairy cows to fifteen and build a zero grazing unit in the future.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
