Benkan Group's story

The women of the Benkan group, all married, are 39 years old on average with 5 children and live in traditional extended households in the Banankabougou area of the city of Fana in the Dioïla prefecture, Koulikoro region (the second administrative region in the Republic of Mali).
They know each other through familial, neighbourhood, and social relations. They prepare food and sell food condiments, vegetables, plastic items, and beverages.
The women of the Benkan group are on their tenth solidarity (group) loan, which will be used to buy rice, condiments, beverages, and vegetables.
Kadia D., one of the group members, intends to buy food condiments every week at the Fana market. She makes her sales every day at her home and at the market in Marka-Coungo, in cash and on credit, to a clientele composed mainly of women.
She foresees realizing an average monthly profit of 25,000 FCFA, some of which will be used to repay the loan costs and to provide for various familial and social events, with the remainder being reinvested in her business.
