Benkola Group's story

The women of the Benkola group are all married and on average they are 38 years old. They each have 8 children and they live in traditional extended families in the city of Baroueli, located in the Baroueli prefecture in the region of Segou (fourth administrative region in the Republic of Mali).

They are known through family, as neighbors and through friendships. They are involved in the sale of cosmetics, fabrics, tubers, perfumes, kitchen wares, and soaps.

The women of the Benkola group are on their sixth group loan.

Assan D. purchases cosmetics from the wholesalers from Burkina Faso. She resells her products in cash and credit at a market in Baroueli to a clientele made up of women and men.

She expects to earn a monthly income of 60 000 FCFA which will be used to make the payments for this loan, to pay for health care related expenses, to purchase food, and to pay for school fees. The remaining portion will be used to reinvest in her business.
