A loan of $550 helped buy clothing, shoes, perfumes, creams, and gift items for store.

Josefa Azucena's story

In the suburb of San Jorge in the city of Portoviejo, a beautiful city of green mountains and enchanting landscapes, the members of the San Jorge communal bank hold their meetings every 15 days.

One of those members is Josefa, 47, who is married and has three grown children, two of whom still live at home. She also cares for the son of her oldest daughter, who is doing her medical internship in Portoviejo. Josefa’s husband is a retired policeman.

Josefa has a small variety store in her house where she sells clothing, shoes, makeup, costume jewelry, and gift items. She works here every day from 8:30 AM to 11:00 PM. Josefa says that she has had her business for several years and loves earning her living this way. She enjoys attending to her customers. Once a month, she goes to Guayaquil to purchase products for her inventory.

With this loan, Josefa will buy clothing, shoes, perfumes, creams, and other products to stock the store. She has been with her communal bank since the beginning, and she likes the ease of making payments. Her dream is to have a much larger store.
