Meet the members of the “Self Help” group from Makeni, a city in northern Sierra Leone. They are all local entrepreneurs who have come to SMT, a partner of Kiva, to apply for a loan of SLL 800,000 for each person. With the help of this loan they will be able to expand their businesses, make more sales and consequently improve their living conditions.

Ya Marie K. (pictured in the middle) is the leader of this group. She is 45 years old and is married to a building contractor. Together they have six children. Ya Marie has been a businesswoman for nine years, selling sardines, powdered milk, soaps, etc. With her share of this loan, she will buy the above mentioned items at wholesale to add to her current inventory.
