Kyakimwa S. is an entrepreneure and president of the Neema solidarity group, which is composed of 14 members. She is 52 years old and married with six children. Her husband is an official with the Congolese control office, one of DRC’s largest public corporations.

She sells Fanta (soft drink) from her home. She started her business using her own capital to sell pagnes (colorful West-African cloth). Later, in 2004, she obtained a $50 loan from the Hekima MFI.

This new loan will be used to buy merchandise (40 cases of Fanta soft drink) to increase her stock both in volume and in value. She also plans to open a reference shop.

Kyakimwa S. wishes to thank Hekima for helping the less fortunate who don’t have the option of turning to traditional banks.

Son conjoint est un fonctionnaire de l’Etat à l’office congolais de contrôle (OCC),l’ une des grandes entreprises publiques en RDCongo. Elle fait le petit commerce de vente de Fanta (sucrés) à son domicile. Elle commença son business avec son fonds propre par une activité de vente de pagnes. Plus tard, elle bénéficia de crédit de l’IMF Hekima de 50$ en 2004. Ce nouveau crédit doit lui servir de s’approvisionner avec des nouveaux produits (40 casiers de Fanta sucrés) pour augmenter son stock en volume et en valeurs. En plus, elle ambitionne ouvrier une boutique de référence. La cliente Kyakimwa S. remercie Hekima pour ses actions en faveur de pauvres exclus de banque classique. Le groupe Neema est constitué de 14 membres.

HEKIMA is a microfinance institution headquartered in Goma, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), with branch offices in Goma and Bukavu. HEKIMA aims to contribute to the transformation of the economic, social, and spiritual lives of the economically active poor of the DRC. To this end, HEKIMA provides its clients with solidarity group loans to support income-generating activities. Despite ongoing instability and violence in its operating areas, HEKIMA continues to keep its doors open and provide credit and savings services for its over 90% female clientele.

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
