María Cumanda's story

Señora María O. is a member of the Nuevos Horizontes (New Horizons) Community Bank. She lives in the Totoracocha neighbourhood in the city of Cuenca which is renowned for beautiful scenery, its mixture of colonial and modern architecture, its unique four rivers, as well as its wonderful food beloved by locals and foreigners alike.

Sra. María is 58 years old, married, and has three adult children who are married and have left home. Her husband does not live in the country but has left in search of better work opportunities. She does not own her house but lives in rented accommodation. María runs a stall selling jewelry, a business she began five years ago. She works from 9am to 7pm Monday through Saturday. She has been a member of her bank for eleven years, and the loans have helped her greatly with her business and home. The money from this loan will be used to buy more merchandise for her business. Her goal is to have a much more prosperous business.
