A loan of $1,000 helped buy ingredients to make "encebollados" (a dish made from fish, onions and cassava).

Sofía Mariela's story

The 100% Charapote Communal Bank meets in the city of Charapoto every two weeks. This place is known for its traditional culture. It is also known for being a few minutes from two of the best beaches, San Jacinto and San Clemente, in the province.

This is where we find Sofía. She is 35 years old and in a common-law marriage. She has three children, ages 19, 18, and 12. The two younger ones are in school. Her husband is a farmer. She has a place in her house where she sells “encebollados” (a dish made from fish, onions and cassava). She works every day from 7:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Her children help her with her business, which she has had for six years. She has managed to have a lot of customers who prefer her seasoning. In addition to selling encebollados, she also sells soft drinks, beer, and fruit juices that are delivered to her place.

This loan is to buy the ingredients needed to prepare the delicious encebollados. She is a founding member of the communal bank. She likes it because, in addition to learning something new at each meeting, she has fun with her friends.

Her dream is to have her own house and her own place of business because the place where she lives and has her business is rented.
