A loan of $1,000 helped to buy fruit and vegetables.

Rosa Gladys's story

The “El Pedregal” communal bank meets every two weeks in El Pedregal in Picoaza parish, city of Portoviejo. This is a very commercial zone well known for its traditional festival of Saints Peter and Paul and for the cheerfulness of its people.

This is where we found Rosa, 35. She is married and has three children who are 9, 6 and 6 months of age. The two oldest are in school. Her husband is a merchant.

She is a housewife who, wanting to help out with household expenses, is taking out a loan for her husband’s business. He has a stall in the city of Portoviejo’s market where he sells fruit and vegetables. He works from Tuesday through Sunday from 3am until 1pm. He buys his products at the city’s wholesale market.

This loan is to buy fruit, vegetables and leafy green vegetables. She has been in the communal bank for 8 years and likes it because the loans have helped her somewhat to meet household expenses. She is the bank’s Secretary. Her dream is to have a store in her house.
