A loan of $900 helped to buy colas, bananas, peanuts, cooking oil and other ingredients.

Nora Cleofe's story

The city of Portoviejo, the capital of Manabi province, has been known for many years as the City of the Royal Tamarinds. In this city, the members of the communal bank " Av. Del Ejército" meet every 15 days.

Nora was born in Esmeraldas province, but 8 years ago she came to this city. She is 39 years old, and is in a common-law marriage which has produced 4 children aged 21,19,17 and 15. The children all live in her home; three of them study at the University and the youngest is in school. Her husband is a merchant.

She has a post in the Alajuela and 1 de Enero streets where she sells empanadas, corviches (banana dough with a seafood filling), and colas. She works from Mondays through Saturdays from 3pm until 7pm, but in the evenings she also works making decorations and crafts.

This loan will be used to buy colas, bananas, peanuts, cooking oil and other ingredients to make her dishes. She has been a member of her communal bank for 6 years, and she likes it because of the easy payment terms on the loans. Her dreams are to have her own home and to have a store where she could sell her crafts.
