Joseph is a farmer from Nyamira town in western Kenya. He has been farming for the last 25 years and employs two farmhands. His main products are maize and tea, which he sells locally. He is also in the business of buying and selling cows at a local market.
He has requested this loan through Juhudi Kilimo of 45,000KES to purchase and insure a dairy cow. The proceeds from this loan will help him pay school fees for his children. In the future, he plans to own a posho (cornmeal) mill that will help supplement his income. His biggest challenge has been low prices for his products, especially tea.
Joseph is 52 years old and married with seven children who are now between the ages of 13 and 33. Two of his children are currently attending school.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
