The women of group Benkadi are all married and average 41 years of age and five children living in traditional extended families in Konobougou City, in Barouéli prefecture, Region of Ségou (4th administrative region of the Republic of Mali). The group members know one another through ties of kinship.  They do commerce in clothing, and they work in food service. The group members are now on their 12th solidarity loan, which will be used to buy cosmetic products, clothing, condiments, and milk.  

Ms. Bintou D. gets her supplies of clothing in Dakar and in Bamako. Accepting cash or credit from a customer base composed of women and men, she goes door-to-door each day selling in the different districts of Konobougou City.  

Bintou envisions making an average monthly profit of 50,000 francs CFA that will be used for making the loan payments and for assisting with societal ceremonies. The rest will be reinvested in her clothing business.

Les femmes du groupe Benkadi, toutes mariées, ont en moyenne 41 ans, 5 enfants et vivent toutes dans des familles traditionnelles élargies dans la ville de Konobougou, préfecture de Barouéli, Région de Ségou (quatrième région administrative de la république du Mali).
Elles se sont connues à travers des liens de parenté et font le commerce d’habillements et la restauration.
Les femmes du groupe Benkadi sont à leur douzième prêt solidaire qui sera utilisé pour acheter, des produits cosmétiques, des habillements, des condiments alimentaires et du lait. BINTOU D. s’approvisionne en habits à Dakar et à Bamako. Elle effectue ses ventes à Bamako et quotidiennement en ambulante entre les quartiers de la ville de Konobougou, au comptant et à crédit, à une clientèle composée de femmes et d’hommes.
Elle envisage réaliser un bénéfice moyen mensuel de 50 000F CFA qui sera utilisé pour payer les échéances du prêt, payer les contributions des cérémonies sociales et le reste sera réinvesti dans son activité de commerce d’habillements.

Soro Yiriwaso is a microfinance institution that works primarily in rural and semi-urban areas of Mali to provide underprivileged communities with access to financial services.The organization facilitates access for disadvantaged clients, particularly women, to new resources and services, fostering solidarity and cooperation among its clients. Kiva lenders’ funds will enable Soro Yiriwaso to expand its outreach and target even more underserved Malians involved in business and agriculture.

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
