Benkadi Group's story

The women of group Benkadi are all married and average 41 years of age and five children living in traditional extended families in Konobougou City, in Barouéli prefecture, Region of Ségou (4th administrative region of the Republic of Mali). The group members know one another through ties of kinship.  They do commerce in clothing, and they work in food service. The group members are now on their 12th solidarity loan, which will be used to buy cosmetic products, clothing, condiments, and milk.

Ms. Bintou D. gets her supplies of clothing in Dakar and in Bamako. Accepting cash or credit from a customer base composed of women and men, she goes door-to-door each day selling in the different districts of Konobougou City.

Bintou envisions making an average monthly profit of 50,000 francs CFA that will be used for making the loan payments and for assisting with societal ceremonies. The rest will be reinvested in her clothing business.
