This photo was taken in Irma J.'s house. She is an indispensable member of the Gardenias D. Sumidero group, which is located in the community of Sumidero, in the State of Veracruz, Mexico. Irma can be seen in the photo among the group of women surrounded by the clothing which she sells. She sells second-hand clothing, and has done so for 24 years. She is requesting the loan in order to buy more winter clothing and to diversify her business for this season. Her fellow group members and her customers know her as a hard-working and responsible person. At the time of asking for this loan, she is very happy since it is a good season for the sale of winter and new year's clothes. She is 47 years old, attended school through the 9th graD., is married and has 3 daughters. She wants this loan so she can supplement her clothing business with seasonal merchandise and improve her sales. She also hopes, in the not too distant future, to be able to move her business out of her house to a new location, and to sell new clothing, not second-hand clothes like she sells now, thereby improving her quality of life and that of her family.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
