This group decided to call themselves Los Alcatraces de Peña (The Lilies of Peña) because they all agree that calla lilies ("alcatraces") are beautiful and the women identify with them. They added "de Peña" because they live in Monte de Peña.

Maria S. G. is the group's treasurer. She is 42 years old, married, and has two children: one is 9 years old and the other is 19. For 22 years she has made bags, backpacks and suitcases. She has a little room in her house where she keeps her sewing machines and the material for making the backpacks. Maria is asking for a loan to set up a space for her sewing workshop where she can put more machines and therefore increase her production. She is thinking about using the extra earnings to finish putting flooring in her house and to buy clothes for her children.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
