A loan of $725 helped purchase of grocery items and to invest in growing potatoes.

Elena's story

58-year-old Elena is a widow of two years. She is still sad about his death, but the constant support she receives from her 3 children motivates her. She lives alone in her own home in the city of San Ramón (in the central Peruvian rainforest). The happiness she shows is a reflection of the support she receives from her children, who built their houses around her so they could look after her. Elena makes a living selling food, vegetables and fruits, from a little space set up in her home. She has been at this business for 4 years, but as this successful woman tells us, she also has a business selling coffee and honey. She gets these products in the city of Perene, where she travels constantly, and then sells them in the country’s capital. Elena’s strengths are surprising because she also grows potatoes in the city of Tarma, where she travels every harvest season. She is, however, aware of her advanced age, which is why she would like to buy a knitting machine to make sweaters to sell in the city of Huancayo and La Oroya. This is her eighth MFP loan, and she is happy belonging to her communal bank, which, in her own words, “is like family.” Once she gets the requested loan, she will use it to buy supplies for her grocery shop and if she makes any extra money she will spend it on growing potatoes.
