Apollonea's story

Apollonea A. is a married lady. Her husband helps in running the business and they have six children aged between twenty-five years old and twelve years old. Her business is located at a busy market in Kakamega. Kakamega is the region in Kenya known for production of sugar cane and it is known as the sugar belt region.

She makes and sells steel doors, windows and gates. She has been in this business for five years now and has two employees. She says that this business is profitable and the only major challenge she has is scarcity of materials for making the items that she sells. She also admits that being a woman, she has to work extra hard to convince the local people that she can do exellent work for them just like men. This is because this kind of business is male dominated. She works very hard to keep her business doing well. She is using her loan of Kes 50,000 to buy steel to expand her business and meet the demands of her customers. In future, she hopes to open a hardware store. She also hopes to bring up a healthy and literate family. She describes herself as hardworking, persistent and patient.
