A loan of $525 helped to diversify her stock by adding eggs and to expand her business by purchasing more rice, oil, vegetables, and other foods.

Martha's story

On top of being an entrepreneur, Martha, 50, takes care of her seven children. Three are in high school and one is studying electrical engineering. She wants to make sure that she is financially able to support all of her children to the highest degree of education possible.

Martha is expecting higher profits if she receives her loan. She will be adding more products to her stall in the market. Her foods sell very quickly after she purchases them. Also, she will be adding eggs to her store to diversify what she carries.

Martha is a member of the lending group, Eye Nyame. This group guarantees a loan through a group repayment pledge. Peer pressure and support provide the incentive to repay; if one person in the group defaults, the group members make up the payment amount. The members of Eye Nyame have developed close relationships. They take care of each other’s businesses while they are away.
