A loan of $1,975 helped a member to buy chicken, beef, flour, oil and plantains.

Canal De Bendicion 6 Group's story

Eliana is the coordinator of her group Canal de Bendicion 6 (Channel of Blessing). Her story is representative of her group and of Esperanza's Dominican and Haitian clients generally, many of whom recently emigrated to the DR from Haiti. Her group is located in the rural areas surrounding La Romana, where the economy is dominated by the sugarcane harvest and where running water (none of which is potable) and electricity are unreliable. She makes her home here in a simple structure with her two children, taking care of them as a single mom.

Eliana is excited to be taking her fourth loan with Esperanza after having successfully repaid her previous loan and expanded her business. She plans to use this loan to invest in her business selling fried food, by buying chicken, beef, flour, oil and plantains. She operates a fried food stand where she cooks dinners for sale. She will use the profits to improve her quality of life by building her house out of concrete block, for more security.
