José Luis's story

The members of the “La Unión Hace La Fureza” (Strength Through Unity) Communal Bank meet every two weeks in the Rocafuerte canton. This place is known for the delicious sweets that its inhabitants make. The sweets are known throughout the whole country.

This is where we find José Luis L.. He is 30 years old and in a common-law marriage. They have a seven year old daughter who is disabled. She cannot hear or speak. His wife devotes herself to the household chores.

He has a small cabinetmaking shop. He makes lots of things like doors, furniture, chairs, shelves, and other products made from wood. He makes things by order, and he has had his shop for seven years. Thanks to God that he has had work. He works from Mondays through Fridays from 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. He buys the raw material in a wood depot in the city of Portoviejo.

He will use this loan to buy more wood, paint, and other products for his work. He has been in the communal bank for two cycles. He likes the talks and the loans, etc. He dream is to have a larger shop with adequate machinery.
