A loan of $1,000 helped to buy apples, grapes, pears, peaches, etc.

Segundo Alfonso's story

Every two weeks the members of the 'Los Andes' community bank meet in the city of Portoviejo which has been known since colonial times as the City of the Royal Tamarind Trees.

Here we meet 32 year-old Segundo. He is married and has 4 children aged 16, 14, 12 and 6 who are studying in high school and elementary school. Segundo was born in the city of Riobamba but he came to live in this beautiful city several years ago. His wife is a saleswoman.

Segundo sells fruit, particularly fruit from the mountains such as apples, grapes, pears and peaches, as well as other delicious fruits from this part of the country. He works every day from 7.00am to 6.00pm. He works alone since his wife has another business the same. He gets his fruit from a wholesale supplier in Guayaquil.

Segundo will use this loan to buy fruits such as apples, grapes, pears, peaches, etc. He has been a member of his community bank from the beginning and he likes it because the interest rates are low. His dream is to have a big store.
