A loan of $900 helped to buy shoes and natural products.

Eliana Mercedes's story

Every fortnight the members of the 'La California' community bank meet in the Nueva California district of the city of Portoviejo, the capital of Manabí, which has been known for many years as the city of the royal tamarind trees.

Eliana has been a member of her community bank for 10 years and she is very happy with the benefits that she has received from the institution. She is 58 years old and separated but has three children from her relationship. They are all now grown up. Two of her children are professionals and the other is studying at university.

Eliana is a teacher in a local public school. She also sells shoes and natural products. She works every day in the afternoons and evenings and she makes her sales door to door. She leaves her products on credit and collects payment every week. She buys her products in Quito and Guayaquil twice a month.

This loan will be used to buy shoes and natural products. Eliana's dreams are to continue working and one day to be able to travel to the USA so that she can visit some of her siblings who live there.
