María Agustina's story

Every fortnight the members of the 'La Unión Hace La Fuerza' (Unity is Strength) meets in Rocafuerte canton. This place is known for the delicious sweet treats that its residents make. They are known throughout the country. María has been a member of the community bank for 10 years and she is very happy. She tells us that what she likes most are the meetings because she gets to enjoy herself with her friends. María is 46 years old and lives with her common-law husband. She has two daughters, aged 9 and 6, who are in school. Her husband is a salesman. María has a small premises in her home where she sells fast food such as 'pan de almidón' (a traditional bread), 'corviches' (traditional deep-fried stuffed pastry) and 'tortas de choclo' (a traditional dish based on ground corn) as well as coffee, soda, etc. She works every day from 7.00am to 8.00pm on her own. She tells us that she has been in this business for many years and it has always done well. María will use this loan to buy ingredients for preparing food, coffee, soda, etc. Her dream is to have her own home since she lives in her in-laws house.
