Caroly Maribel's story

Every fortnight the 'La Unión Hace La Fuerza' (Unity is Strength) community bank meets in Rocafuerte canton. This place is known for the delicious sweet treats that its residents make which are known throughout the country.

Here we meet Caroly. She is 43 years old, married, and has three children aged 14, 9 and 6. All her children are studying at school. Her husband is a master builder. This is her second loan cycle as part of her community bank and she likes it because the members are very punctual.

Caroly has a small eatery in her home where she prepares delicious meals. She works from Monday to Saturday from 6.00am to 3.00pm. She works alone. One of her goddaughters used to help her but she left and now Caroly is on her own. She tells us that she has had her eatery for 17 years and it has always done very well because her clients love the taste of her dishes which are very special.

This loan will be used to buy rice, meat, fish and other ingredients for preparing her meals. Her goals are to continue in her business and provide her children with a good education.
