Poline is a dairy farmer from the town of Murang'a in central Kenya. She has been farming for 18 years now and employs one farmhand. She sells her milk to the local market. She also earns income from her small-scale farming of coffee which she sells to the local market.
Poline is 43 years old and a widowed mother of two children aged 17 and 22 who both attend school.
She has requested this loan of 35,000 KES through Juhudi Kilimo to buy a chuff cutter. The extra income from this loan will help her pay for the education of her children. Her major challenge has been fluctuation in the market prices of farm produce. She hopes that her milk production will increase in the future since she hopes to acquire more dairy cows.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
