Marta Rafael's story

Marta Rafael L. was born in the district of Namaacha, in the province of Maputo in the south of Mozambique. She is married and has 4 children whose ages range from 18 to 26. The three older children are working and the youngest is in school. Marta only studied through 7th grade, and didn't continue because of a lack of financial resources. She lives with her family in their own house and helps support a grandson who lives with them.

Marta still lives in Namaacha. After finishing school she was able to get a job with the Civil Registry, and worked in towns in Namaacha for 5 years. She had the opportunity to continue this work in central Mozambique, but her husband kept her from taking the job transfer because it was too far away. After that, Marta got a job as a pastry chef at the Hotel Xisaka. She's worked there for 15 years and has a monthly salary of 4000 Meticais, which she uses to cover household expenses. With the help of her husband and the salary he earns as a teacher, she is also able to save some in her bank account.

This is Marta's 5th loan with Hluvuku [the Kiva field partner] and her 2nd funded through Kiva. She is asking for 15,000 Meticais to buy construction materials (cement, stone, metal plates and other items) in order to continue working on a home expansion project.

She is confident that she will be able to repay the loan ahead of schedule and take out a new loan later in order to pay for the upkeep and painting of the new portion of her home.
