A loan of $550 helped to buy cooking pots, spoons, frying pans, toothpaste etc.

María Vicenta's story

Señora María P. is a member of the El Ahorro ("The Savings") communal bank. She lives in greater Cuenca, a city which is reknowned for the architectural beauty of its historic centre, its culture and traditions, and for the warmth of its people.

Señora María is 38 years old, and lives with her partner and their 4 children, aged 16, 11, 8 and 4. Her eldest daughter is married and living independently, while her next two daughters are attending a secondary school in the city. Her husband works as a travelling salesman, selling various goods such as cooking pots, spoons, etc. They do not have their own house, but live in rented accommodation.

Señora María is originally from the province of Portoviejo. A while ago she used to live in this city, and returned to our city a year ago for work. She is a salesperson like her husband, and sells her goods walking around the city. She works 7 days a week. She has been doing this type of work since she was very small, when, as a little girl, she used to work alongside her father.

This is her second loan since she was invited by her cousin to be part of the communal bank. She is going to invest this new loan in the purchase of cooking pots, toothpaste, etc., to sell. Her dream is to have her own house.
