A loan of $1,100 helped to buy ingredients to make sweets.

Decsy Rossany's story

Every fortnight the 'Mujeres Trabajadoras' (Hard-Working Women) community bank meets in Rocafuerte canton. This area is known for the delicious desserts and sweets which its residents produce and which are known throughout the country.

Here we meet 38 year-old Decsy. She is a single mother and has 4 children aged 18, 16, 15 and 8. The three eldest are in school but the youngest is not yet in school. She tells us that it is a very difficult job being both father and mother to her children but that she always tries to do everything she can so that her children have a very good education.

Decsy makes and sells sweets. She works four days every week. In the mornings she gets up at 5.00am to make her sweets. Once they are ready she delivers them to salespeople who take them to sell in Tosagua, Chone and other cantons. Her children help her in her work.

This loan will be used to buy the necessary ingredients for making her sweets. Decsy is a founding member of her community bank and she is very happy because thanks to the loans she has been able to improve her business and get her children ahead in life. Her dream has always been to have a small business with machinery so that she can make more sweets.
