Fighting for a better future? We need your help.

Creating a more equitable world takes a lot of time and energy, but at Kiva we’re in it for the long haul. 100% of money lent on Kiva goes to funding loans. That means we rely on donations from people like you to make this work possible. For a limited time, if you donate $35 or more, a $25 bonus will be added to your account (you’ll get an email once it’s there).

A loan of $375 helped to buy 13 sacks of organic fertilizer.

Hugo's story

Hugo is 37 years old. He lives with 25 year-old Encarnación and they have 3 children: 14 year-old Yelsi, 12 year-old Nicol and 4 year-old Paola. They live together in their own home in the community of Sanchirio el Palomar (central Peruvian jungle).

Hugo's work is growing coffee and bananas. He has been in this business for 7 years and he says that what he most likes is cleaning his farm lands. “I enjoy getting rid of the weeds”, he says. Every 15 days, Hugo travels to the city of La Merced where he sells the bananas which he harvests. However, he sells his coffee production to traders who constantly visit his crops.

Hugo lacks capital to improve the quality of his plantations. In the future, he would like to open a food business in his community to make more income and thereby be able to invest in his farming.

This is Hugo's third loan from MFP and he likes the work that he does together with his community bank because in this short period of time he has managed to achieve improvements in his crops. He will use his loan to buy 13 sacks of organic fertilizer for his coffee plantations which he will harvest in the coming months.
