Margaret is 40 yrs old. She is married and the mother of four, aged between 6 and 23 years, all attending school. She has been practising mixed farming for the last ten years. She sells vegetables, maize, beans and tomatoes in the local market. She has two casual employees.
She has requested this loan of Kshs. 50,000 from Juhudi Kilimo to expand her tomato farming and cereal produces. This will earn her income to support her family. In five years she hopes to have at least four dairy cows for milk production.
Her two main challenges are lack of a ready market for the products and poor the transport network.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
