Miriam Janneth's story

Miriam M. is a member of the communal bank Dinastía Espoir; she lives in the Eucaliptos neighborhood in the city of Cuenca which is known for the beauty of its historic center, its diverse cuisine, the richness of its cultural traditions, and for its kind and friendly people.

Miriam is 29 years old; she is married and has two children aged 12 and 6. Her elder son is studying in middle school; her younger daughter is in primary school. Her husband is a merchant; they do not have a house of their own, so they are renting.

Miriam has been in the business of selling costume jewelry for over twelve years. She works as a street vendor, selling her inventory all around the city almost everyday, with the exception of Tuesday. Miriam is also a licensed beautician, and on Tuesdays she works as a stylist at home -- something that she has been doing for two years. During the Christmas season, she sells stuffed toys which provides her with some additional income.

This is Miriam's second loan with the communal bank, and she plans to invest it into the purchase of additional inventory such as perfume, rings, earrings, and stuffed toys. Her goal is to have her own store so that she could run all her businesses in one place.
