Luz Divina 1 & 2 Group's story

María is one of the members of the “Luz Divina 1 y 2” (Divine Light 1 & 2) group located in Los Alcarrizos which is a very industrialized area in the north part of the city of Santo Domingo. It has a large population that depends on firms and the economy in the main city. Like in many other cities, drinking water and electricity are scarce. The population is composed both of Dominicans and Haitian immigrants.

This Esperanza associate sells men’s, women’s and children’s shoes. María is a single mother of two children. She tells us that her most difficult challenge is getting ahead and helping her children. She enjoys business very much; it’s her favorite activity.

María is excited to receive her 4th loan from Esperanza Internacional having satisfactorily repaid her previous loans and taken a step toward her business’ growth. She has had her business for about 3 years which she started because a girl friend encouraged her to go into the catalogue shoe selling business.

She plans to use her new loan to buy several dozen shoes for men, women and children. She plans to use her profits to cover family expenses and to save. Her dream is to own a house of her own and to be able to stay in business.

In this group: Maria, Rosa, Felicia, Yohanna, Dilcia, Leoncia, Denny, Mirian, Florencia, Juana
