Lelita's story

Lelita A. is from the village of Sulipat, Calamba, Mismais Occidental. She is 30 years old. Lelita is married and has 3 school-aged children. To make a living, Lelita owns & operates a specialized retail store. While not the only means for generating revenue, the main source of income for the business comes from selling seafood products including fish and shrimp in the local community. Lelita has been engaged in her business for over 2 years and earns approximately 4000 PHP a month for these activities.

In 2010, Lelita joined GDMPC to gain access to financial services to help improve her living situation and ability to engage in business activities. Lelita has successfully repaid a previous loan of 8,000 PHP from GDMPC. This previous loan was used to to purchase additional inventory and as working capital. Lelita is requesting a new loan of 8,000 PHP which will be used to purchase additional products to sell. This will be the third loan taken out by Lelita from GDMPC. She plans to use the additional revenue generated from the business to supplement the family's income.

GDMPC is one of the most progressive cooperatives in Mindanao, Philippines. It has four branches and three unit offices covering the provinces of Zamboanga del Sur, Lanao del Norte and Misamis Occidental. Its membership is composed mostly of farmers, fisherfolk and small entrepreneurs.
