Mrs. Carmen Rosa S. A. is the President of the communal bank. She is 44 years old and lives in Los Heraldos de Motupe, San Juan de Lurigancho district. She is married and has three children, two who are independent and a little 5-year-old.

The communal bank has 10 enthusiastic, pioneering members. It is a much unified, mutually supportive, group that is committed both to the group and family goals they have set. They have been collaborating with us for two years and are grateful for the accomplishments they have reached because each has seen her family stand out and have better living conditions.

Carmen sells food in a market near her home. She has been in this business for six years. Thanks to the work and financial help through loans from EDAPROSPO – PROSPERIDAD she has managed to provide better education for her children and to build a second story on her house.

Mery dreams with having a restaurant in her home equipped with all the comforts a restaurant can have. Because of this, like all fighting, enthusiastic mothers, she sees this dream within her reach because she will use the recently granted loan to complete some of the house’s finishing touches to start toward the dream she so desires.

In the photo, Mery is standing wearing a white polo shirt and blue tracksuit.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
