A loan of $1,100 helped to buy fruit and vegetables.

Asunción Beatriz's story

The La Guerra de los Sexos ("The War of the Sexes") community bank meets every fortnight in Picoaza parish, in the town of Portoviejo. This is a place which is well known for being a very commercial area, for its traditional San Pedro and San Pablo fiestas and for the rich cultural history which its mountains encircle.

Here we meet 48 year-old Asunción who is married and has 4 grown-up children. Her 21 year old daughter still lives with her. Her husband is a salesman.

Asunción and her husband have a stall in the central market in Portoviejo where they sell all kinds of fruit and vegetables. They start work every day at 4.00am when they go to the market to buy their products from wholesalers. They then begin to put organize their products so that when their customers arrive they find everything well laid out. Asunción and her husband work until 6.00pm. They tell us that they have had this business for 20 years and it has done very well.

This loan is so that Asunción can continue investing in fruit and vegetables which she has to buy every day. She has been a member of the community bank for 10 loan cycles and she likes the ease of making payments. Her dream is to have a store with all the products her customers need.
