A loan of $550 helped to purchase items for a small shop, fruits and vegetables.

Indaura Ismelda's story

The communal bank María Auxiliadora meets in Sequita Parrish, which belongs to Montecristi in the prosperous Manabita Canton. The area is full of hardworking and dedicated people who are proud of their roots. Sequita is a Parrish whose inhabitants are honest people who primarily work and take care of their families.

It is here that we find Señora Indaura. She is 56 years old and is in a common-law marriage, which according to her is more than a marriage and from which she has had 8 children. Five of her children are grown. Her 21 year-old daughter and her youngest child, who is 16 years old, live with her and study at a school in Manta. Her husband is a merchant.

Señora Indaura sells a variety of items from her home. She has a small shop where her customers come to purchase whatever they may need. She works every day from 8am until nighttime. Since her business is run out of her home, she can help people at whatever hour they choose to come. In addition to this business, her husband sells fruits and vegetables in Manta. He works three days a week traveling through the streets of Manta with his produce on a three-wheeled cycle. They purchase the shop items as well as the fruits and vegetables in Portoviejo.

Half of this loan is for Señora Indaura's business, and the other half is for her husband's business. She has been a member of the communal bank for 18 cycles, and she likes the payment terms and benefits that the institution offers. Her dream is that her children complete their studies and become professionals.
