A loan of $675 helped to buy beauty products and pay educational expenses.

Elizabeth Mercedes's story

The “Damas De Progreso” (Ladies of Progress) meets every two weeks in the San Cristóbal enclave of the city of Portoviejo.

Elizabeth has been in the communal bank for two years and likes it because of the seriousness of her fellow group members as well as for the loans that are of great help to her. She is 20 years old and a single mother of a son who is a year and eight months old. She lives in her parents’ house and is in the fifth semester of Medicine at Manabí Technical University.

She sells Yanbal brand products (beauty supplies, perfumery and women’s accessories). She goes out daily to sell and also sells to her classmates at the university. She sells on credit and collects payments every two weeks. She tells us that she started the business two years ago when she was pregnant and needed to have her own source of income to rely on both for her education and for her small son’s expenses.

This loan is to pay fror the order she has as well as for some things she needs for the university. Her goals are to finish her studies and become a great Surgeon.
