A loan of $550 helped to buy papers, books and notebooks.

Nelva Elizabeth's story

The communal bank Los Ceibos meets every two weeks in the residential area of Las Orquideas in the city of Portoviejo. This is a poorer urban area where people do different types of work.

Mrs. Nelva, 49, lives here. She is in a common-law marriage and she has 5 children, two that are adults. Three are of her daughters are studying in a university, two are in high school and the oldest is now on his own. Her husband is in business.

She has a printing and stationery shop in the center of the city where she rents a shop. She works Mondays to Saturdays from 8 am to 6 pm with the help of two employees who are paid monthly. She tells us that at the beginning of classes she has to hire help and she buys the merchandise in different locations and she has the products delivered.

This loan will be used to buy paper for the copier, books and assorted kinds of notebooks. She is a founding member of the communal bank and she likes it for the ease of payments.

Her dreams are to have her own store to save the rent money and to buy herself a car.
