A loan of $675 helped to buy irons, blenders, beds, mattresses, etc.

Mercedes Teresa's story

The 'Damas de Éxito' (Successful Ladies) community bank meets every two weeks in the Cevallos neighborhood of the city of Portoviejo. This is a very densely-populated, marginal, urban area of the city.

This is Mercedes' second loan cycle with the community bank and she is very happy because, thanks to the previous loan she received, she has been able to fulfil some orders which she was previously unable to fulfil because she didn't have enough capital. Thanks to her previous loan she was able to move forward. She is 37 years old and lives with her common-law husband with whom she has 5 children. Three of her children are already grown up and two are studying and still live with her. Her husband is a merchant.

Mercedes is a merchant like her husband. She sells products for the home (irons, blenders, fans, beds, mattresses, etc.) on request. She shows her customers a catalog, they choose the product they want to buy, she makes a note of it, then when she has reached a certain quantity she places her order, receives the goods from her supplier, then delivers them and collects payments weekly.

She works from Monday to Friday, for three or four hours a day.

This loan will be used to pay for the order which she has for this month. Her wish is to have her own house since she lives in a house which her mother gave to her.
