Phon S. is a 43-year-old woman, married to Mr. Vin Mao, age 47, and they are living in Battambang Province. Phon S. lives with three school-aged children and earns a living by planting various crops on their own farmland. Phon S. is currently planting a potato crop, which she will harvest and sell when they are mature. She has a life partner in her husband who works in motorcycle repair, earning approximately US$ 3 per day. This couple also takes time to fish around the river from which they are able to make additional income.
Phon S. has hired a neighbor’s boat to support her in her fishing activities. She wants to be the owner of a boat which will allow her to cut out the hiring cost. In order to ensure that is possible, Phon S. would like to request a Kiva loan in the amount of US$ 400 to be used to buy a boat, as well as buying more fishing gear.
Hattha Kaksekar Limited is one of the largest and most successful microfinance institutions (MFIs) in Cambodia. The organization provides microfinance services to the poor, particularly women, in urban and rural areas. Kiva lenders’ funds will be used to expand the outreach of HKL’s financial services to a greater number of clients in rural areas of Cambodia.
