A loan of $800 helped a member to buy gara lapper making materials (caustic soda, powder, inks, white cotton cloths, etc) and slippers to add to her business.

We Believe We Self Group's story

Memunatu K. (pictured on the left) is the leader of this group of entrepreneurs. Memunatu was born in Makeni city about 32 years ago. She is married to a teacher and the couple has three children who are attending school. For seven years now, Memunatu has been selling gara lappers (locally dyed cloths) and slippers.

This is not the first loan that Memunatu and her group members have applied for from SMT/Kiva lenders. However, with the help of this new loan, they will be able to further expand their businesses, make more sales and consequently improve on their living conditions. Memunatu will use her share of the loan (SLL 800,000) to expand her business. She will buy gara lappers making materials like caustic soda, powder, inks, white cotton cloths, etc. in order to produce a larger quantity of gara cloths. She will also buy dozen of slippers to add to her business.

(Attached to this photo is a snapshot of a borrower, Rugiatu K., who was not able to be present for the group photo).
