A loan of $350 helped to buy pigs and animal feed.

María Magdalena's story

Mrs. María P. is a member of the “El Paraíso” (Paradise) communal bank. She lives in the community of Confianza, Cumbe parish. One can find large pasture areas of cattle ranches and romantic old haciendas in her surroundings. The Cumbe parish center is arranged around a central plaza noted for conserving its traditional architecture which is reflected in the two story houses. Most of the residents are farmers and cattlemen.

María, 54, was widowed 24 years ago. She has three adult children who live independently. From her second marriage she has 7 children, the two oldest are married and live independently and the five single children work and contribute to household expenses. Through her work she has managed to build her house. Her second husband is a farmer.

María raises chickens, guinea pigs and pigs for later sale in her own community. She is also a farmer. Most of what she grows is for her own consumption; just a very small part of it is sold.

She is the founding member of the communal bank and the loans have benefited her business. The new loan will be used to buy pigs and feed for them.

Her goal is to have more animals.
