A loan of $1,100 helped to buy bags of organic fertilizer and to hire workers.

Elvin's story

Elvin, age 45, is an honest man who is dedicated to his family. He is separated from Marcelia; they have five children. As a good father, he takes care of the children, who are all minors. They live together in his own house in the indigenous community of Pumpuriani.

He has been farming since he was a little boy. When he started his family 22 years ago he started to plant on his own fields. He started with bananas and coffee, premium products in the Peruvian jungle. With his years of experience and dedication he was taught how to grow “achiote” (annatto). The process is very complex, and very few people grow it. That makes Elvin one of the few producers in the area.

Their sales are very profitable and generate good income. He says that, “The merchants come personally to buy my products”. Later he wants to buy his own farm land. The land he plants on now belongs to the community. He plans to consolidate his production to be able to pay for his children’s university education.

This is his fifth loan with MFP. He is very grateful to the people who are giving him the opportunity to be able to get ahead. Without it he would not be able to get “something more”. Elvin plans on using the requested loan to buy bags of organic fertilizer (natural fertilizer). He also will be able to pay workers to keep his fields free of weeds.
