A loan of $1,000 helped to buy a computer.

Nancy Leticia's story

Nancy, 41, lives in a canton called Playas one of Ecuador’s tourist destinations with a wide range of seafood. She does computer jobs at home and rents her computer to people in the area as a source of extra income.

To help her husband meet their three children’s expenses she did a study in her neighborhood to see what folks in the area needed and she discovered that what they wanted was someplace to do research on the Internet. She decided to buy a computer and provide computer services and to rent computer time. Little by little she was able to add a printer to print out the assignments.

She is currently open for business from 2pm to 6:30pm because that’s the time her children are in school and she has time to take care of customers. She charges $0.50 per hour of Internet time, printing research costs $1.00. With the time she’s been in business she’s been able to buy a cell phone recharging base as still another source of income.

She wants to use the loan to buy another computer to provide improved customer service and earn more income. In the future she’d like to have an Internet café in her house to provide better economic opportunity for her children.
