A loan of $1,000 helped to buy medicine for her daughter, who is suffering from an intestinal infection.

María Teresa's story

Ms. María Y. is a member of the Eugenio Espejo communal bank. She lives in the community of Narancay Bajo, some 10 minutes from the city of Cuenca, where most people work in agriculture or animal husbandry. Many people also find work in factories, doing construction, etc. in the city. Some have also migrated to various places around the world in search of better work opportunities.

Ms. María is 27 years old, married, and has two children who are 7 and 4 years old. The children are in school and her husband is a taxi driver. They do not own their own house so they rent.

Doña María has worked as a domestic employee for one year and three months. She works from nine in the morning until five in the afternoon.

This is her third loan through the communal bank and she is happy to be part of a great group of hard-working and enterprising women. Her loan will be used towards her daughter's health, as she is suffering from an intestinal infection and the medicines are expensive.

Her goal is to have her own business selling clothes.
