A loan of $1,000 helped to invest in cocoa supplies.

Darwin Dagoberto's story

Darwin Dagoberto R. Q., 19, lives with his parents in Chillanes canton, Bolívar province.

He is a member of the Progreso Comunitario (Community Progress) communal bank located two hours from Chillanes. It has 11 members who are mostly cocoa bean farmers or have small businesses.

Darwin is employed as a day worker in the fields and grows cocoa beans on his parents’ farmlands. He makes his purchases and his sales in Mabahoyo and Mata de Cacao.

He is asking for funds to invest in cocoa seeds. He hopes that help from the loans will lead to improved agricultural production. His dream is to buy a house and have his own cocoa orchards. This year his crops have been affected by “Escoba de Bruja” (Witch’s Broom, a plant fungus).

He likes to play volleyball and participate in his town’s festivals in his spare time.
