Benkan Group's story

The women of the Benkan group are all married with four children, are 31 years old and live in large traditional families in the village of Marka-Counga, in the municipality of Fana, in the Koulikoro region (the second largest administrative region of the Republic of Mali). They met through friends and family and sell clothes, milk and beans. They are on their fourth loan. Bata D. is a group member and aims to use the loan in order to buy clothes for men and women of all ages. She sources her goods from Bamako through wholesalers and sells her wares at the Marka-Coungo market for cash or credit to a customer base made up of men and women. She aims to generate an average monthly profit of 50,000 FCFA which will be used to see to her family's everyday needs and the rest will be reinvested in the business.
