The eleven people who make up this village bank loan live in Chen village in Takeo province. Mrs. Saom B. is 41 years old, and was selected to be the village bank president by the other members. Each will use their portion of the loan for different purposes.

She and her husband, Mr. P. YoU., are farmers who own a one hectare plot of land on which they cultivate rice to sell to support their family. He is also a motor taxi driver. Her problem is that her field contains infertile soil. So, to improve production, Mrs. Saom B. is applying for a loan to buy fertilizer and with the rest of the loan she will hire a plowing machine and pay for farming laborers.

She is a mother of four children, one of whom is a laborer, one is a seamstress in a garment factory, and the others are attending school. The day of the loan disbursement Mrs. Saom B. was busy working in the field. Her husband, Mr. P. YoU., received the loan for her. In the photo above is Mrs. Saom B.'s husband.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
